Developed in the late 19th century by crossing the Hanoverian Hound with the Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound, this breed was purpose-built to track wounded game across challenging terrain. Its dense, wiry coat and powerful build reflect a working heritage that prioritizes endurance, nose, and grit over flashy appearance.
