The Swiss Hound, known officially as the Schweizer Laufhund, is a scenthound of considerable antiquity, developed in Switzerland for trailing game across varied and demanding terrain. With a history that may trace back to Roman times and Celtic hounds, this breed was refined over centuries to work independently, using its voice to signal hunters from a distance. Recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in Group 6, the Swiss Hound remains a specialist working dog, prized for its endurance, keen nose, and melodious bay.
